POLITICAL STORM IN OYO AS APC CHALLENGES MAKINDE OVER PROJECT NAMING
Tensions have escalated between the Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state government regarding the naming of a project in honour of the late Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi.
Until his recent passing, Akinremi represented the Ibadan North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He was elected under the APC platform in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
A bye-election to fill the vacant seat has been scheduled for Saturday, August 16.
The dispute centers on a housing estate project reportedly being commissioned by Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration. In a statement signed by APC Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Olawale Sadare, the party criticized the move, describing it as a politically motivated attempt to exploit the late lawmaker’s name.
According to Sadare, the project is an afterthought, aimed at masking the alleged illegal conversion of the state-owned Trans Amusement Park in Ibadan into private housing developments.
"Erecting a gatehouse on public land marked for sale cannot be considered a legitimate government project," he stated.
He further argued that the late Akinremi had already made a lasting impact through numerous constituency projects and empowerment initiatives during his lifetime. Naming the controversial estate after him, he said, amounts to political theatrics and a disrespectful act tantamount to "dancing on his grave."
