POLITICS ISN’T DIRTY, BORNO CAN URGES CHRISTIAN PARTICIPATION
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State has called on Christians to actively participate in politics, stressing that governance should not be viewed as a “dirty game.”
The state CAN Chairman, John Bakeni, appealed while addressing journalists at the 3rd Gwoza Christian National Conference in Maiduguri.
Bakeni expressed concern over the low level of Christian involvement in political activities, noting that this has limited their representation and access to leadership opportunities.
He rejected the long-held belief that politics is inherently corrupt, describing it instead as a system of governance that reflects the values of those who participate in it.
According to him, Christians should engage in politics to positively influence leadership and decision-making processes.
Bakeni emphasised that political participation is a civic responsibility in a democratic system, urging Christians to join political parties and contribute meaningfully to governance.
Also speaking, Emmanuel Ibrahim said the conference aimed to promote inclusivity and educate citizens on their roles in a democracy.
He added that effective participation and representation are essential for unity and development, especially amid ongoing security challenges in the region.
The speakers also called on authorities to prioritise development in education, healthcare, and infrastructure, while ensuring the safe return of displaced persons to their communities.
