Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, in Oyo State, have taken to the streets to protest the recent renaming of their institution to Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic.
The demonstration has caused major traffic gridlock, leaving many commuters stranded along the busy Sango-Eleyele Road in Ibadan.
The renaming was carried out by Governor Seyi Makinde in honour of the late Omololu Olunloyo, a former governor of the old Oyo State, who passed away at the age of 89. Olunloyo holds the distinction of being the first Ibadan indigene to govern the state.
Eyewitnesses report that the protesting students have barricaded both the main gates of the school and the adjoining Sango-Eleyele Road.
