Popular gospel musician Israel Terhemba Ikyereve, widely known by his stage name New Jerusalem, has passed away at the age of 53, sparking an outpouring of grief across Benue State and the wider Christian community.

Ikyereve was celebrated for revolutionizing Tiv Swange music by turning it into a powerful tool for gospel evangelism. His unique sound and ministry touched countless lives, both in Nigeria and abroad.

Former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, led a condolence visit to the late singer’s home in Makurdi, accompanied by members of the Brethren Prayer Group. He described Ikyereve as a passionate servant of Christ whose music deeply inspired him.

“His songs ministered to my soul,” Ortom shared. “That connection drew me to him and blossomed into a close relationship with his family.”

The former governor also recounted witnessing New Jerusalem’s music being played during an international event in Australia, where a Tiv man was teaching music. According to Ortom, this highlighted the far-reaching impact of Ikyereve’s gospel work.

Ortom offered prayers for the grieving family and assured them of his continued support, especially towards the New Jerusalem Gospel Music Troupe, promising not to abandon them after the funeral.

Speaking on behalf of the family, the singer’s elder brother, Hon. Iorshagher Ikyereve, expressed deep appreciation for Ortom’s steadfast support throughout the late singer’s illness and afterward. He also revealed that one of Israel’s sons was named “Ortom” in honor of the former governor’s kindness.

Prayers during the condolence visit were led by Rev. Pastor Tor Ujah and Dr. Joseph Antyo of the Brethren Prayer Group.

The late gospel minister is survived by his wife, fellow gospel singer Deborah Msendoo Ikyereve, four children, and extended family members.

His burial is slated for Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Sati Agirigi, Mbamo, Shitile, in the Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
