Power Minister’s Mansion Video Sparks Reactions Amid Electricity Challenges

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has come under public scrutiny after a video showing him inside his multi-million naira mansion in Ibadan, Oyo State, went viral on Tuesday.

In the clip, Adelabu is seen in his lavishly furnished white mansion, surrounded by supporters. The property’s luxury finish and size have drawn attention — and criticism — given the dire state of Nigeria’s power sector, which the minister oversees.

Adelabu’s ministry faces numerous challenges, including a crippling liquidity crisis, chronic power shortages, recurring grid collapses, problematic tariff structures, and ageing infrastructure. Earlier this year, the minister revealed that the federal government owes electricity generation companies a staggering N4 trillion in legacy debts.

Meanwhile, a June 2025 World Bank report estimated that 86.8 million Nigerians — the highest number in the world — still live without electricity, highlighting the scale of the sector’s problems.

The video has since sparked debates on social media, with many questioning the optics of a top public official flaunting personal wealth while millions of citizens endure power blackouts and rising energy costs.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
