The Premier League has clarified why Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon was shown a straight red card in Sunday’s dramatic clash against Liverpool at St James’ Park.

The incident occurred in the first half when Gordon fouled Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. Referee Simon Hooper initially issued a yellow card but was advised by VAR to review the challenge on the pitchside monitor.

After watching the replay, Hooper upgraded the punishment to a red card, sending the Newcastle number 10 off.

The Premier League Match Centre later posted on social media:

“After VAR review, the referee overturned his on-field decision of a yellow card to Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle United number 10 committed a serious foul play challenge. The challenge was made with speed and clear contact on the Liverpool number 4’s calf. My final decision is a red card.”

Despite Newcastle’s fight with 10 men, Liverpool went on to win 3-2, with 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha scoring a dramatic winner in the 100th minute.

The decision has sparked debate among fans, but the Premier League insists the red card was the correct call under the rules of serious foul play.
