PRESIDENCY SAYS NIGERIANS HAVE RIGHT TO SELF-DEFENCE, LEGAL GUN OWNERSHIP

The Nigerian Presidency has stated that citizens have the constitutional right to defend themselves and legally own firearms, amid growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the country.

According to the Presidency, while security agencies remain responsible for protecting lives and property, Nigerians are also entitled to pursue lawful means of self-protection within the framework of existing laws.

The statement comes as conversations continue nationwide over rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and attacks affecting several communities.

Officials stressed that any form of firearm possession must comply strictly with legal procedures and licensing regulations established by the government.

The Presidency also warned against illegal arms possession, noting that unauthorised weapons remain a major threat to public safety and national security.

Security experts say the debate around civilian self-defence and legal gun ownership has intensified as many rural and vulnerable communities seek better protection against armed attacks.

However, some analysts have cautioned that expanding access to weapons without effective regulation could worsen insecurity if not carefully managed.

The discussion continues to generate mixed reactions among Nigerians, with many calling for stronger security reforms, improved policing and faster emergency response systems across the country.
