PRESIDENT TINUBU ISSUES NEW SECURITY DIRECTIVES TO TACKLE VIOLENCE AND RESTORE PEACE ACROSS NIGERIA
In a bid to tackle the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, President Bola Tinubu has issued new directives to security and intelligence leaders to enhance efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in areas plagued by violence. This decision follows an urgent meeting held at the President’s official residence in the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.
After the meeting, National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu informed the press that President Tinubu had been closely following the security situation, even during his time away, and had been briefed in detail on the current developments. Ribadu stated that the President listened attentively to the briefing and issued clear directives, underscoring his firm commitment to ensuring peace and security across the country.
Ribadu shared that President Tinubu emphasized the need for decisive action, saying, “Enough is enough. He wants to see real results. All security agencies—the military, police, and intelligence services—are fully engaged and working non-stop. Although not all issues have been completely resolved, notable improvements have been made.”
The new directives aim to improve cooperation between federal security agencies and local authorities in regions suffering from insecurity, with particular focus on Plateau, Benue, and Borno States. Ribadu stressed that tackling insecurity is not solely the responsibility of the federal government, pointing to the importance of working closely with local governments, governors, traditional leaders, and community members.
Ribadu also noted that security officials had recently visited these troubled areas, as instructed by the President, meeting with local political and community leaders to assess the situation firsthand and implement effective solutions. While he acknowledged the continuing challenges, particularly in the North-East, where insurgent groups remain active, Ribadu highlighted the need for ongoing adaptation to the changing nature of threats.
In Borno State, Ribadu mentioned a recent surge in incidents caused by insurgents planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs). He commended the security personnel for their relentless efforts, despite the risks and sacrifices involved. “These brave men and women are working tirelessly, and their contributions must not go unnoticed,” he said.
Reflecting on the progress made over the past year, Ribadu stressed that while each life lost is tragic, the overall security situation has improved. “Security is relative. When you compare where we were before with where we are now, we’re not exactly where we want to be, but we are moving forward,” he said. “We won’t stop until we achieve lasting peace.”
The meeting, which included high-ranking security officials such as the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Mohammed Mohammed, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Emmanuel Undianeye, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, and the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, reaffirmed the commitment of all security agencies to implement the President’s directives and ensure the safety of all Nigerians.
With full support from the President and strengthened collaboration between federal and local authorities, the Nigerian government is determined to address the country’s security challenges and work towards achieving lasting peace.
