PRESIDENT TINUBU PAYS TRIBUTE TO LATE FOLKLORE LEGEND MIKE EJEAGHA
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the family, admirers, and fans of legendary Nigerian folklorist and musician Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95.
In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President hailed Ejeagha as a cultural icon whose music and storytelling style helped preserve the rich traditions of the Igbo people.
“Mike Ejeagha’s songs carried wisdom, identity, and the heartbeat of tradition. His unique ability to teach and inspire through music left a legacy that will endure for generations,” Tinubu noted.
The President reflected on the timeless nature of Ejeagha’s music, emphasizing how it continues to resonate with audiences today. He highlighted the recent resurgence of interest in the late artist’s song Gwo Gwo Ngwo, which has been trending across social media platforms, reigniting admiration for his cultural contributions.
President Tinubu also commended the Enugu State Government, under Governor Peter Mbah, for recognizing and celebrating Ejeagha during his lifetime — a gesture he described as vital in honouring cultural custodians while they are still with us.
“May the spirit of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music continue to uplift us, reminding us of music’s power to heal, inspire, and drive national unity,” the President said.
He concluded by praying for the peaceful repose of the departed icon and for comfort for all who mourn his loss, underscoring the profound mark Ejeagha left on Nigerian music and culture.
