The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended two of its officers after a jailed inmate was caught attempting to apply for an international passport while still in custody.

The suspension was announced in a statement on Saturday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, in Abuja.

Umar explained that the illegal act was detected through the Nigeria Immigration Service’s (NIS) automated passport system, highlighting how effective collaboration between government agencies can be.

“This violation was discovered two weeks ago thanks to recent reforms in the NIS, which helped detect the suspicious activity,” Umar said.

The Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), under the supervision of Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, took disciplinary action by suspending the involved officers.

NCoS spokesperson also quoted the Controller General of Corrections, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche, who stressed the agency’s strong commitment to discipline, transparency, and professionalism in all correctional facilities.

He added that the Service remains focused on securely keeping inmates, treating them humanely, and ensuring their reformation, following global standards.

“Any officer found involved in misconduct, corruption, or acts that undermine the system will be removed immediately,” the Service warned.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
