PSG TURN DOWN MULTIPLE MAN CITY OFFERS FOR SUPER FALCONS STAR ECHEGINI
Paris Saint-Germain have rejected several approaches from Manchester City for Nigeria international midfielder Jennifer Echegini, with the French club reportedly determined to retain the Super Falcons star despite growing interest from the Women’s Super League side.
According to reports cited by BBC Sport, Manchester City have made multiple offers for the 25-year-old midfielder, but PSG have remained unwilling to sanction her departure. The Parisian club reportedly regard Echegini as an important part of their squad and are not currently prepared to sell her.
The situation is particularly notable because Echegini has only one year remaining on her current PSG contract. Despite the contract situation, the French club are said to be prioritising squad stability and do not want to lose the Nigerian midfielder during the current transfer window.
Echegini joined PSG two years ago after spending the 2024 season with Italian giants Juventus. Before moving into European professional football, she spent much of her youth career in England, giving her considerable experience of the English football environment.
Her performances for Nigeria have also contributed significantly to her growing reputation. Echegini was part of the Super Falcons squad that won the Women's Africa Cup of Nations last year, scoring the decisive goal in the final against Morocco as Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th continental championship.
Manchester City’s interest comes as the English club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new Women’s Super League campaign. The club have until Thursday’s transfer deadline to complete any further additions, leaving limited time to convince PSG to reconsider their position.
City’s need for additional midfield options has also been heightened by the absence of experienced forward and midfielder Vivianne Miedema, who is expected to miss the beginning of the season because of a knee injury.
Echegini’s versatility and international experience are believed to make her an attractive option for Manchester City as they seek to strengthen their squad. However, PSG’s reluctance to negotiate means the English club face a difficult task if they want to complete the transfer before the deadline.
The French side are themselves preparing for an important Women's Champions League assignment, with PSG scheduled to face Eintracht Frankfurt in the third qualifying round. The club’s preparations for the European campaign could be another reason behind their reluctance to allow an important squad member to leave at this stage.
While PSG are resisting Manchester City’s attempts to sign Echegini, another player is expected to leave the French club before the transfer deadline. France defender Elisa de Almeida is reportedly set to join Arsenal after the two clubs reached an agreement.
The proposed transfer for de Almeida is understood to be worth around £550,000, although she is expected to remain available for PSG’s Champions League fixture against Eintracht Frankfurt before travelling to London to complete her move.
For Echegini, the latest development means her immediate future remains in Paris, with PSG showing little indication that they are ready to accept Manchester City’s advances.
With the transfer deadline approaching, City will have to decide whether to return with another proposal or abandon their pursuit of the Nigerian midfielder. PSG, meanwhile, appear determined to keep Echegini as they prepare for the new domestic and European campaigns.
