REEKADO BANKS: “I LEFT MAVIN RECORDS TOO EARLY”
Nigerian singer, Reekado Banks, has opened up about his exit from Mavin Records, admitting that he left the label earlier than he should have.
The award-winning artist, who rose to fame under Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records, revealed this during a chat with reality star Teddy A on The Echoo Room. Reekado, who won Rookie of the Year at The Headies 2014 and the highly debated Next Rated award in 2015, parted ways with the label in 2018 to start his own imprint, Banks Music.
According to him, his decision wasn’t fueled by conflict but by his own eagerness to step out on his own. He explained that although his initial three-year contract had expired, he allowed it to run for two extra years without renewal.
“It wasn’t a conflict situation. I was pretty young and fixated on what I wanted. I thought I could handle it on my own. My contract had ended two years prior, and I had been with Mavin for five years in total. When I finally decided to leave, I thought I was ready. But as soon as I jumped into the sea, I realised how premature it was,” Reekado confessed.
Despite acknowledging the challenges of going independent, the singer made it clear that his relationship with the label and its founder, Don Jazzy, remains cordial.
Reekado’s honesty has sparked fresh conversations online about the risks young artists face when leaving major labels to chase independence.
