REMO STARS STRENGTHEN NPFL TITLE BID WITH VICTORY OVER HEARTLAND FC
In a commanding performance, NPFL leaders Remo Stars bounced back from a recent setback, securing a vital 2-0 win against Heartland FC in Ikenne on Sunday. This victory maintains their impressive eight-point lead at the top of the table, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.
Midfielder Olamilekan Adedayo opened the scoring in the 31st minute, followed by a late goal from new signing Samson Olasupo in the 80th minute, reigniting Remo's title ambitions after a disappointing 2-1 loss to Bendel Insurance last week.
The Sky Blue Stars began the match energetically, creating several chances in the first 15 minutes through Fabian Nworie, Sodiq Ismail, and Franck Mawuena. Adedayo’s goal came from a well-placed low shot to the bottom right corner, thanks to Mawuena's assist.
As the second half unfolded, Mawuena was again denied a goal before Olasupo, a second-half substitute, extended the lead with a header off a cross from Tochukwu Michael, marking his second goal for the club in just three matches.
For Heartland, coached by former international Emmanuel Amuneke, this defeat leaves them in 17th place, just a point above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Rivers United, managed by Finidi George, continue to chase Remo Stars, achieving a hard-fought 2-1 away win over El-Kanemi Warriors in Maiduguri. After a tense first half, Taofeek Otaniyi broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half, and Samson Bossa Obi doubled the lead in the 61st minute. El-Kanemi managed to reduce the deficit with a stoppage-time goal from Risilanu Ismail.
In Uyo, Shooting Stars faced a major blow in their title pursuit, falling 2-0 to relegation-threatened Akwa United at the Nest of Champions.
Matchday 29 delivered high drama at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, where Ikorodu City and former champions Enyimba battled to an exciting 2-2 draw. Ikorodu City’s captain, Tosin Oyedokun, put his team ahead in the 41st minute, but Enyimba responded swiftly in the second half with two goals from Mojeeb Odufeso and Joseph Atule. Just when it seemed like Enyimba would claim all three points, second-half substitute Ayomide Cole struck deep into stoppage time to level the match, intensifying the race for continental qualification.
As the NPFL season progresses, the competition heats up, with Remo Stars firmly in the mix for the title.
