REPS APPROVE $516M LOAN FOR SOKOTO–BADAGRY SUPERHIGHWAY
The House of Representatives has approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to secure a $516,333,007 syndicated loan facility from Deutsche Bank AG for infrastructure development.
The approval was granted on Tuesday during plenary in Abuja following the presentation of a report by the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Aids, Loans and Debt Management, Abdullahi Rasheed.
The loan is expected to finance parts of the proposed Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, one of the flagship infrastructure projects of the Tinubu administration.
President Tinubu had earlier written to the National Assembly seeking legislative approval for the facility.
He explained that the funds would be sourced from Deutsche Bank to support the execution of key sections of the road project.
According to the President, the request specifically covers Sections 1, 1A, and 1B of the Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway.
The proposed 1,000-kilometre highway is designed to connect Nigeria’s North-West and South-West corridors.
The route is expected to pass through Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun and Lagos states, stretching from Illela to Badagry.
The Federal Government said the highway would improve connectivity, facilitate trade, and promote economic integration across the affected regions.
The project is also expected to ease transportation challenges and stimulate development along the corridor.
The approval marks another major legislative backing for the administration’s broader infrastructure expansion agenda.
