The House of Representatives has approved the 2026 statutory budget proposals of the Federal Capital Territory Administration and the Niger Delta Development Commission, passing budgets of N2.29 trillion and N1.75 trillion, respectively.

The approvals were granted during plenary on Thursday, following the presentation and adoption of reports by the relevant House committees.

Presenting the report on the FCT budget, Chairman of the House Committee on FCT, Muktar Betara, explained that the N2.29 trillion proposal was designed to address personnel costs, overhead expenses, and critical infrastructure development in Abuja.

According to him, N165.78bn was allocated for personnel costs, N378.23bn for overhead expenditure, while N1.74tn was earmarked for capital projects.

The lawmakers approved N6.79bn for the security services department of the FCTA as part of efforts to strengthen security within Abuja and surrounding satellite communities.

The budget also allocated N1.51bn to the FCT Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board and N910.20m to the Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board.

For capital projects, the education sector received N162bn, while engineering services secured the highest allocation of N758.15bn.

The resettlement and compensation department was allocated N143.18bn, while the satellite towns development department received N212.74bn to improve infrastructure in suburban communities around Abuja.

The House also passed the N1.75 trillion 2026 budget of the NDDC following the presentation of a report by the Chairman of the House Committee on NDDC, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu.

A breakdown of the NDDC budget showed that N47.57bn was approved for personnel costs, N49.93bn for overhead expenses, and N22.36bn for internal capital expenditure, while N1.63tn was dedicated to development projects across the Niger Delta region.

Lawmakers said the approvals are expected to support infrastructure expansion, security improvements, transportation projects, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment initiatives in both the Federal Capital Territory and the oil-producing Niger Delta states.

The House also stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the implementation of the NDDC budget amid longstanding concerns over abandoned projects and contract irregularities in the region.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
