The House of Representatives has called for urgent security reinforcements and relief supplies following an attack on Binnari community in Taraba State that reportedly killed between 57 and 60 people.

The attack occurred on October 23 in Karim Lamido Local Government Area, according to a motion presented on Thursday by Mohammed Audu, who represents Karim Lamido, Lau and Ardo Kola Federal Constituency.

Audu told lawmakers that gunmen opened fire as residents and traders gathered at the community market, killing 10 people immediately. He said several others jumped into a river while fleeing, bringing the estimated death toll to between 57 and 60.

He also reported that attackers returned to neighbouring Gomben Dela on October 26, where they allegedly stole food and vehicles. No deaths were reported in that incident.

Lawmakers Seek Security Cooperation and Relief

The House urged stronger intelligence-sharing among security agencies in Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states.

Audu said forested areas across the three states could be providing routes for the attackers, making coordinated operations necessary.

He also called for the completion of the abandoned Wase–Karim Lamido road, saying better access would help security personnel and emergency responders reach vulnerable communities.

Lawmakers appealed to emergency agencies and humanitarian organisations to provide food, building materials, blankets, mattresses and other essentials to survivors.

“We Must Go Beyond a Minute of Silence”

Minority Leader Fredrick Agbedi said repeated attacks demanded more than expressions of sympathy.

He called for technology-driven operations to identify assailants, track their movements and prevent further violence. He also urged stronger legislative oversight of security spending and operational strategies.

Responding, the Deputy Speaker maintained that government interventions had produced progress, citing figures on security operations, surrendered fighters and recovered communities.

He said the minute of silence observed for the victims was an act of remembrance, rather than the House’s only response.

Lawmakers called for sustained efforts to protect affected communities and prevent further attacks.
