RETURN HOME, PURSUE PEACE, TINUBU URGES PLATEAU LEADERS
President Bola Tinubu has called on leaders in violence-affected communities in Plateau State to return home and immediately begin renewed peacebuilding efforts, saying the Federal Government is ready to support any genuine initiative aimed at restoring stability.
Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday while meeting with Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, traditional rulers, political leaders, and other stakeholders in Abuja.
He urged the leaders to put aside divisions and work collectively toward lasting peace, adding that unresolved issues could be referred back to the Federal Government for further intervention.
According to him, existing peace reports and recommendations should be revisited and implemented, while former governors and other key stakeholders should be included in the reconciliation process.
“Leaders will go back home and summon the leadership mission… Take that white paper that you have. Go through it among yourselves and agree to implement those white papers,” the President said.
Tinubu also said state police remained part of ongoing national security reforms, arguing that decentralised policing would help address insecurity more effectively.
He stressed that development cannot take place in an atmosphere of violence, warning that continued killings would only deepen humanitarian and social crises.
“It is very tough to develop if you don’t have peace,” he said, adding that restoring stability is essential to prevent further loss of lives and displacement.
The President also directed stakeholders to identify individuals responsible for instigating violence, saying security agencies would act on credible intelligence.
“If you identify and you know the name of troublemakers… let us know. We use the instrument of office to deal with them,” he said.
Tinubu further instructed the governor to take the lead in coordinating renewed reconciliation efforts, including restructuring or expanding existing peace committees where necessary.
He also called for the inclusion of youths and non-indigenes in governance and peace processes, alongside public awareness campaigns to discourage discrimination and conflict.
Tinubu assured that the Federal Government would support infrastructure development in the state once peace is restored, including roads and other critical projects.
He concluded by urging collaboration among all parties, expressing optimism that sustained dialogue and unity would lead to lasting peace and prosperity in Plateau State.
