RIGHTS GROUPS COMMEND AKPABIO FOR FORGIVING CRITICS, DROPPING DEFAMATION SUIT

A coalition of civil society organisations operating under the banner of Human Rights Africa has commended Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his decision to forgive his critics, including the Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Akpabio recently withdrew a defamation lawsuit filed against Akpoti-Uduaghan and publicly declared his forgiveness for all individuals who have criticised him.

Reacting to the development in a statement issued on Friday, the coalition described the Senate President’s action as a clear demonstration of maturity, tolerance, and magnanimity in leadership.

The statement, signed by the coalition’s chairman, Dr. Ahmed Ilya, noted that Akpabio’s gesture represents a rare display of statesmanship, anchored on the principles of forgiveness, reconciliation, and responsible governance.

According to the group, the decision to rise above personal attacks in the interest of peace and national cohesion reflects Akpabio’s commitment to democratic values and respect for the rule of law.

The coalition observed that while public office holders are often subjected to intense scrutiny and criticism, responding with restraint and forgiveness—as demonstrated by the Senate President—helps to ease political tensions and promotes constructive engagement within the democratic space.

“At a time when the nation is contending with political polarisation and deep social divisions, this action serves as a timely reminder of the need for dialogue, tolerance, and unity in confronting national challenges,” the statement read.

The rights groups further urged political leaders, civil society stakeholders, and citizens to emulate Akpabio’s example by prioritising peaceful coexistence, truth, and accountability over hostility and the spread of misinformation.

Human Rights Africa reaffirmed its commitment to advancing democratic governance, civic responsibility, and national unity, while encouraging leaders across all levels to continue acting with humility, fairness, and respect for democratic principles.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
