RISE NETWORKS PARTNERS INEC, BIG TECHS ON AI HACKATHON AHEAD OF 2027 POLLS
Rise Networks has partnered with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and major technology companies to organise an artificial intelligence hackathon aimed at developing technology-driven solutions ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The initiative is expected to bring together young innovators, software developers, data specialists and other technology professionals to explore how AI can support electoral transparency, strengthen civic participation and improve access to reliable election-related information.
The partnership comes as Nigeria prepares for another general election cycle, with growing attention on the role of technology in addressing challenges such as misinformation, voter education, electoral logistics and public trust in the voting process.
Through the hackathon, participants are expected to develop practical solutions that could help citizens access election information, understand voting procedures and engage more effectively with the democratic process. AI-powered tools may also offer opportunities to analyse public information, identify misleading content and improve communication between electoral authorities and voters.
INEC’s involvement is significant because of the commission’s responsibility for organising and supervising elections across the country. Collaboration with technology organisations could provide opportunities to explore innovative approaches to electoral administration while supporting public awareness and transparency.
Rise Networks has focused on technology, innovation and youth development, making the initiative an opportunity to encourage young Nigerians to apply their technical skills to national challenges.
The participation of major technology companies could also provide innovators with access to technical expertise, mentorship and opportunities to develop solutions that can be tested or scaled beyond the hackathon.
However, the use of AI in elections also presents challenges, including the risk of deepfakes, automated misinformation, data privacy violations and the spread of misleading political content. Any technology adopted for electoral purposes would therefore need appropriate safeguards, independent oversight and clear accountability mechanisms.
Experts have stressed that AI should complement rather than replace established electoral procedures. The credibility of elections will continue to depend on transparent processes, effective institutions and the ability of voters to access accurate information.
As preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum, the Rise Networks initiative highlights the growing role of technology in Nigeria’s democratic development and the potential for young innovators to contribute to a more informed and transparent electoral process.
