RIVERS STATE UNIVERSITY BANS NIGHT DRIVING ON CAMPUS AFTER TRAGIC STUDENT DEATH

Management of Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, has imposed a strict ban on undergraduate night driving within the campus following the death of a female student in a fatal road accident.

The directive, announced after an emergency management meeting on Wednesday, prohibits undergraduate students from driving personal vehicles on campus between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Affected students must park at the designated car park near the main entrance and utilise authorised university shuttle services for internal movement.

The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night along Road A on the main campus, where Miss Eno Udosen was knocked down and killed. Eyewitnesses reported that two undergraduate drivers, allegedly racing, lost control of one vehicle, which veered off and struck the student. The drivers reportedly fled the scene, though one vehicle was abandoned.

In a statement signed by Acting Registrar Dr. Idanyingi Daminabo, the university described the ban as a necessary safety measure to prevent recurrence of such avoidable tragedies and protect lives on campus.

The incident has sparked outrage among students and parents, with many calling for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and speed limits within the university environment. The Rivers State Police Command is investigating the case.

This latest policy underscores growing concerns over campus safety and reckless driving among students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
