Two persons, identified as brothers, have died in a fatal road accident that occurred on Wednesday at the Ijapo area of Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The accident involved a Nissan car with registration number Ondo WWW 322 TA, a truck without a registration number, and a motorcycle.

Two other persons sustained injuries in the crash.

The incident reportedly happened in front of the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), where officials were carrying out routine vehicle checks at the time.

Eyewitnesses said the victims were riding on a motorcycle when a speeding truck lost control and rammed into them, as well as a nearby car and other vehicles.

The impact reportedly killed the two brothers instantly.

A commercial driver whose vehicle was damaged in the crash said he narrowly escaped death.

“I came to deliver goods to my boss… I suddenly heard people shouting. When I looked back, I saw the tipper clearing vehicles and motorcycles. I immediately ran for my life,” he said.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Samuel Ibitoye, said the crash was caused by brake failure.

“The accident occurred as a result of brake failure, four people were involved, and two were killed,” he said.

The corpses of the deceased were deposited at the Ondo State Hospital mortuary, while the injured victims were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The police also confirmed the incident, adding that preliminary investigations showed the truck collided with the motorcycle and the Nissan vehicle from behind.

Police spokesperson, Abayomi Jimoh said officers responded quickly to prevent angry youths from attacking VIO officials at the scene.

He added that the bodies had been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the vehicles involved had been recovered for further investigation.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
