ROONEY URGES MAN UNITED TO SIGN DONNARUMMA: “IT WOULD BE CRAZY NOT TO”
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has called on his former club to make a bold move for Gianluigi Donnarumma, insisting the Italian goalkeeper could be the key to restoring confidence in the Red Devils’ defence.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rooney said United’s defenders no longer seem to trust current goalkeepers André Onana and Altay Bayındır, and compared the situation to the early 2000s when the club lacked stability between the posts.
“I go back to when we had Roy Carroll and Tim Howard in goal,” Rooney explained. “I don’t think there was 100% trust from the defenders. But when Edwin van der Sar arrived, everything calmed down — the defenders trusted him, and performances improved.”
Rooney believes Donnarumma, just 26 and already considered one of the best keepers in the world, could have the same impact if United signed him.
“It would be crazy if Manchester United didn’t go for him,” he said.
Calls for change grew louder after Bayındır’s costly error against Arsenal on Sunday, which led to United’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford. Despite the Turkish goalkeeper’s protests that he was fouled by William Saliba, the goal stood — leaving fans frustrated.
Meanwhile, PSG manager Luis Enrique has already made it clear that Donnarumma is no longer in his plans, and the player has yet to sign a new deal with the French giants.
With doubts over United’s current goalkeeping options, Rooney’s words might just push the club to act fast before another top team swoops in for the Italian shot-stopper.
