SACKED QUARRY WORKERS IN CROSS RIVER TURN VIOLENT, HOLD STAFF HOSTAGE
Tension erupted in Obung community, Akamkpa LGA of Cross River State, on Monday after nine recently sacked workers of Akamkpa Quarry Limited went on a rampage.
The disgruntled workers, allegedly armed, destroyed company property, blocked access roads, and took several staff members—including some Indian nationals—hostage. Eyewitnesses said the group also attacked the residence of a local chief and set it ablaze.
Police reports confirmed that the workers claimed they were unfairly laid off. The situation escalated when the aggrieved group damaged vehicles and clashed with law enforcement.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Irene Ugbo, State Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua sent Tactical Teams to the site after the local DPO raised the alarm.
Upon arrival, the police were met with stone-throwing and gunfire from locally made weapons, leaving some officers with minor injuries.
The police responded, arresting several suspects and recovering a locally made rifle, a pistol, a machete, and expended cartridges.
CP Afegbua warned residents against confronting police during lawful duties and urged community leaders to counsel their youths to avoid violent actions that could lead to casualties. Investigations are ongoing.
