Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to building a world-class public education system in Lagos, ensuring that state-run schools can compete on a global scale.

He highlighted the government’s ongoing investments in modern school infrastructure as a key strategy for achieving this vision.

Sanwo-Olu made this commitment while commissioning 12 blocks of classrooms at Ilupeju Community Grammar School, Lagos.

Emphasizing the role of well-equipped learning environments in improving educational outcomes, he reaffirmed his government’s resolve to provide quality education for all. “Education is a fundamental pillar of our development agenda. Our significant investments in upgrading schools demonstrate our commitment to inclusivity and our belief that every child deserves quality education. Our goal is to build a public education system that stands on par with the best globally,” he stated.

The governor was represented by the State Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai.

He referenced research that underscores the strong link between well-equipped educational facilities and improved student performance. “A study conducted in the United Kingdom revealed that school infrastructure—specifically environmental and design elements—contributed to 16% of variations in students’ academic progress. This highlights the crucial role that school facilities play in shaping learning experiences,” he noted.

Sanwo-Olu underscored the importance of secondary education in preparing students for academic and professional success, emphasizing the need to strengthen this critical stage of learning.

“Secondary education is a transformative phase that fosters critical thinking skills essential for higher education and career readiness. Our mission is to enhance this level of learning to better prepare our children for the future,” he said.

He added that the ongoing rehabilitation and construction of classrooms across all districts of Lagos would ensure equitable access to quality education infrastructure.

Addressing students, Sanwo-Olu encouraged them to maximize the benefits of the newly upgraded facilities and remain dedicated to their studies.

“These classrooms are made possible through the contributions of your families via taxes. As primary beneficiaries, it is your responsibility to utilize them effectively for your academic growth and success,” he stated.

Recognizing the vital role of teachers in shaping future leaders, he urged them to take ownership of the facilities and continue delivering quality education.

“These modernized facilities create a better teaching and learning environment. We encourage you to uphold high teaching standards and maintain these resources for future generations,” he added.

The governor also called on community leaders, parents, and stakeholders to support the government’s education initiatives.

“These schools benefit not just the students but the entire community. Your continued involvement and advocacy are essential in preserving these facilities for generations to come,” he said.

At United Christian Secondary School, Apapa, Sanwo-Olu was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, who reaffirmed the state government’s steadfast commitment to education as the foundation of Lagos State’s future.

“The newly equipped classrooms, state-of-the-art science laboratories, staff offices, and administrative block at this school reflect our commitment to creating an optimal learning environment.”

He emphasized the numerous initiatives led by the Special Committee on the Rehabilitation of Public Schools, aimed at renovating and constructing classrooms across Lagos, ensuring that every community benefits from the push for educational excellence.

The governor called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to take responsibility for maintaining the school facilities and preventing vandalism.

Addressing the students, he encouraged them to take full advantage of the resources available and strive for academic excellence.

He also praised the SCRPS team and contractors for their commitment to delivering high-quality educational infrastructure.

At Ipaja Junior Grammar School, where he was represented by the Commissioner for Establishment, Training, and Pensions, Afolabi Ayantayo, Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the transformative power of education.

He urged parents to ensure their children pursue higher education, emphasizing that the government provides free primary and secondary school education.

“The government has made these facilities available. Primary and secondary education is free, so parents must ensure their children take full advantage of the opportunities before them,” he said.

Tutor-General of Education District 1, Bashir Adeoye, highlighted the government's commitment to equipping students with practical skills for self-employment and job readiness.

“We have significantly expanded vocational training in our curriculum, offering 15 skill programs. Many of our schools are excelling in this area,” Adeoye noted.

Mary Fagboye, Principal of Ipaja Junior Grammar School, reinforced the message, stating that education remains a critical tool in addressing economic challenges.

Chairman of SCRPS, Mr. Hakeem Smith, emphasized the importance of students appreciating the efforts behind these projects, commending the team’s dedication to research and quality construction.

Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of Education District 4, Mr. Olusegun Oshinaike, praised the government's investment in public schools, highlighting key initiatives such as the full payment of the 2025 WAEC examination fees for all final-year students and the provision of modern libraries and laboratories to enhance learning.

He described these efforts as proactive and essential steps toward educational excellence.

At United Christian Secondary School, Principal Adeshi Taiwo expressed appreciation for the new infrastructure and requested an e-library to further support academic performance.

In response, Oshinaike referenced an ongoing construction project in Apapa and urged the SCRPS to prioritize its completion, calling it another milestone for the administration.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
