Austria is reeling from a tragic school shooting in the city of Graz that claimed at least nine lives, including the suspected attacker.

The shooting occurred around 10:00 AM at Dreierschützengasse High School, located near the city’s main train station. Among the victims are seven students, one adult, and the gunman, who is believed to have either been a current or former student. Authorities say he likely died by suicide after the attack.

Police and special forces from the elite Cobra unit quickly secured the scene. Injured students were taken to Helmut List Halle, which was converted into a temporary emergency center.

Austria’s Interior Ministry and Graz Mayor Elke Kahr have confirmed the death toll and expressed deep condolences. Chancellor Christian Stocker described the incident as a “national tragedy,” canceling all official engagements in response.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also reacted, saying schools should remain places of “youth, hope, and the future.”

An investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and whether the suspect acted alone.

The incident has deeply shaken the nation, sparking grief and nationwide mourning.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
