A tragic school shooting in Turkey has left nine people dead and 13 others injured after a 13-year-old student opened fire in Kahramanmaraş province.

Authorities said the attacker, an eighth-grade pupil, brought multiple firearms, believed to belong to his father, into the school and began shooting randomly across two classrooms. Several students reportedly jumped from windows in a desperate attempt to escape the gunfire.

The country’s Interior Minister confirmed that six of the injured victims are in intensive care, with three in critical condition.

The suspect, identified as the son of a former police officer, died during the incident, though it remains unclear whether his death was self-inflicted or occurred during the chaos. His father has since been detained by police.

Justice authorities have launched an investigation into the attack, while both interior and education ministers travelled to the affected area.

The incident comes just a day after another school shooting in a different part of the country, raising serious concerns about safety in schools.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed that anyone found negligent will be held accountable, as pressure mounts on authorities to strengthen school security measures.

Opposition figures have also called for urgent reforms, warning that such incidents, previously rare in Turkey, are becoming a growing security concern.

Despite strict gun laws in the country, the back-to-back attacks have sparked national debate over enforcement and school safety.
