The Sustainable Crop Research Institute of Nigeria (SCRiH) and the University of Abuja have signed a partnership agreement to establish a National Agricultural Research Laboratory aimed at advancing crop improvement, food security, and sustainable farming practices.

The collaboration was formalised on Friday during a signing ceremony at the university campus. The facility will serve as a centre of excellence for cutting-edge research in agronomy, biotechnology, soil science, and climate-smart agriculture.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, described the partnership as a strategic step towards strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural research capacity. “This national laboratory will bridge the gap between research and practical application, empowering our farmers with innovative solutions to boost productivity and resilience,” Maikudi stated.

The Director General of SCRiH, Dr. Ibrahim Yusuf, said the lab will focus on developing high-yielding, disease-resistant crop varieties and sustainable farming techniques tailored to Nigeria’s diverse agro-ecological zones. He expressed optimism that the facility will contribute significantly to the country’s food security goals.

The partnership will also facilitate joint training programmes, technology transfer, and collaboration with international research institutions. Both parties agreed to pool resources, expertise, and infrastructure to ensure the success of the initiative.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has welcomed the development, describing it as a welcome boost to the nation’s agricultural research ecosystem. The ministry pledged to provide necessary support to make the laboratory fully operational within the next 18 months.

Stakeholders believe the new facility will play a pivotal role in addressing challenges such as climate change, pest infestation, and low crop yields. The partnership between SCRiH and UniAbuja is expected to serve as a model for other institutions seeking to strengthen Nigeria’s agricultural research and development capabilities.
