SENATE: NORTHERN CAUCUS SEEKS SECURITY BASE IN RIVER BENUE AXIS
A Northern caucus in the Senate has called for the establishment of a security base along the River Benue axis as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and tackle persistent threats affecting communities in the region.
The proposal is aimed at improving the presence and response capacity of security agencies in areas facing challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, communal violence and other criminal activities. Proponents believe that establishing a dedicated security base could improve surveillance, facilitate rapid deployment of personnel and strengthen coordination among security agencies.
The River Benue corridor is strategically important because it connects several communities and supports fishing, farming, transportation and commercial activities. However, insecurity in parts of the wider region has disrupted livelihoods, displaced residents and raised concerns about the safety of rural communities.
The proposed base is expected to provide a more coordinated response to security threats by positioning personnel and operational resources closer to vulnerable areas. It could also support intelligence gathering and improve collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
Senators supporting the initiative are expected to press for stronger government action to protect residents, safeguard agricultural activities and restore confidence among communities affected by insecurity.
The call comes amid broader national concerns about the ability of security agencies to respond effectively to threats across Nigeria. Lawmakers and community leaders have continued to advocate measures that combine improved security operations with intelligence-led policing and stronger cooperation with residents.
Security analysts have stressed that establishing a base alone may not resolve the underlying challenges. They argue that its effectiveness would depend on adequate personnel, equipment, funding, reliable intelligence and clear operational coordination.
They have also emphasised the importance of addressing factors that contribute to insecurity, including poverty, unemployment, disputes over land and limited access to essential services in vulnerable communities.
The Senate caucus’s proposal highlights the need for targeted security interventions in areas where criminal activities threaten lives and economic activity.
Whether the proposed base will be established will depend on further government consideration, security assessments and the availability of resources. Its potential success will ultimately be measured by whether it improves the protection of communities and reduces criminal activity along the River Benue axis.
