📍 Essential News

A political storm is brewing in Kogi Central Senatorial District, as constituents have initiated a recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing a loss of confidence in her leadership.

Reports indicate that signature collection has commenced across the district’s five local government areas—Ajaokuta, Adavi, Okene, Lokoja, and Okehi—with long queues forming at various collection points.

Why Are Constituents Pushing for Recall?

At Ihima in Okehi LGA, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s hometown, residents turned out en masse to sign the recall petition.

💬 “We are sending a message to the world that we no longer trust her representation. Her actions have brought shame to us internationally,” said Abdullahi Usman, a resident of Ihima.

Similar sentiments were echoed at Ajaokuta, where Hajia Rabi Mohammed insisted, “We want her to return home so we can elect someone with a good reputation.”

The Recall Timeline

According to Samuel Adamu, a Lokoja resident, the recall process began on March 19, 2025, and will last two days, with the aim of concluding by March 21, 2025.

💬 “We believe that by Friday, we’ll have enough signatures to officially file the recall petition,” Adamu explained, adding that several attempts to engage Akpoti-Uduaghan had failed.

PDP Chieftain Calls the Recall a ‘Sham’

However, not everyone supports the move. Abdulrahman Badamasiuyi, a People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, dismissed the recall as politically motivated and baseless.

💬 “We want the Senate, Nigerians, and the world to know we stand firmly with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against her illegal suspension,” he said, insisting she retains her mandate until 2027.

With growing tensions in Kogi Central, all eyes are on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to determine the fate of this recall effort. Will the signatures meet the legal threshold? Will Akpoti-Uduaghan fight back?
