SHOOT TERRORISTS WITHOUT DELAY, DEFENCE MINISTER ORDERS TROOPS

The Minister of Defence, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Badaru (rtd), has directed troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations to shoot terrorists on sight without delay, as part of a renewed offensive to restore peace and security in troubled parts of the country.

The minister gave the order on Friday during an unscheduled visit to troops at a forward operating base in the Northeast. He emphasised that the military must adopt a more aggressive posture to deal with the persistent threat of terrorism and banditry.

“Shoot terrorists without delay. Do not wait for them to strike first. Nigeria’s sovereignty and the lives of our citizens must be protected at all costs,” Badaru told the soldiers.

The directive is seen as a significant shift in the rules of engagement, giving field commanders greater operational flexibility to respond to threats. The minister assured the troops of full government support and promised that any action taken in the line of duty will be backed by the necessary legal and logistical resources.

Troops welcomed the minister’s directive, describing it as a morale booster and a clear signal of the government’s determination to end the insurgency. Several officers expressed confidence that the new approach will yield positive results in the coming weeks.

The Defence Minister also reviewed the operational readiness of the troops and assured them of improved welfare packages and timely payment of allowances. He warned against any form of indiscipline or human rights abuse during operations.

The renewed offensive comes as the government faces increasing pressure to tackle insecurity in the Northeast, Northwest, and North Central regions.

 Security analysts believe the minister’s order could mark the beginning of a more decisive military campaign against terrorist groups and bandits.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has pledged to ensure full implementation of the directive and coordinate joint operations among the armed forces to achieve maximum impact.

As the military intensifies its efforts, residents in affected areas are hopeful that the new approach will bring lasting peace and stability to their communities.
