SOKOTO BEGINS ₦22BN HOUSING PROJECT TO ADDRESS SHELTER SHORTAGE
In a bold step to address the housing deficit in Sokoto State, Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Tuesday flagged off the construction of a ₦22 billion housing estate featuring 500 modern residential units.
The foundation-laying ceremony took place in Wajake Village, Wamakko Local Government Area. The project is a key part of the state government’s broader urban renewal initiative, aimed at increasing access to affordable housing—especially for civil servants and low-income families.
Governor Aliyu noted that the estate will comprise 300 three-bedroom flats and 200 four-bedroom flats, to be sold under an owner-occupier scheme to ensure affordability.
“When we came into office, Sokoto had no government-owned houses. This project is our direct response to that gap and reflects our resolve to improve the quality of life for our people,” he said.
Strategically sited near the Sokoto New City, the estate will be developed in collaboration with Teamwork Construction Company Nigeria Limited, with a completion target of 12 months.
Governor Aliyu also highlighted recent efforts to boost housing in the state, including the completion of 500 housing units at Gidan Salanke, a project initiated by former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, and the acquisition of 130 units at Kwannawa from the Federal Ministry of Housing.
“This project is more than just a physical structure—it symbolizes our commitment to building a better future through meaningful, people-oriented development,” he added.
He urged the contractors to maintain high standards and deliver the project on time, stressing that the estate must serve as a model of quality and efficiency.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, who attended the event as a special guest, praised Governor Aliyu’s leadership, describing the initiative as both “historic” and transformative. He also commended the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for his enduring guidance, which he said has contributed to the state’s peace and progress.
This housing project is part of Sokoto State’s larger vision for infrastructure development and urban renewal—designed to reshape the socio-economic landscape and drive long-term growth.
