SOKOTO POLICE CAUTION YOUTHS AGAINST JOINING ‘SAI MALAM’ CULT GROUP
The Sokoto State Police Command has cautioned young people against joining a newly uncovered terror-linked cult group known as Sai Malam, warning that its activities pose a serious threat to public safety in parts of the state.
The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Musa, issued the warning on Friday during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Sokoto. He said the group’s operations had instilled fear and anxiety among residents of several affected communities.
According to Musa, the briefing was part of ongoing efforts by the police to keep the public informed about security operations aimed at restoring peace and dismantling criminal networks across the state.
He disclosed that operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit arrested Mohammed Mukhtar, who was identified as the leader and chief priest of the Sai Malam group.
“A search of his residence, which also functioned as a shrine, resulted in the recovery of a live python, banners inscribed with ‘Sai Malam,’ as well as various charms and other fetish items,” the commissioner said.
Musa described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in the fight against the group and reassured residents of the police command’s determination to eliminate criminal elements threatening peace and security in the state.
He also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor the activities of their children, particularly youths, and called on members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
The commissioner added that the briefing formed part of precautionary security measures before and after the Christmas season, assuring residents that the police would remain committed to safeguarding lives and property throughout Sokoto State.
