SOKOTO POLICE WARN PARTIES AGAINST VIOLENCE AHEAD OF 2027 POLLS

The Sokoto State Police Command has warned political parties, candidates and their supporters against acts capable of threatening peace as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections. The command said it would not tolerate political violence, thuggery, intimidation, hate speech or other criminal activities carried out under the guise of political participation. The warning comes amid growing political activities ahead of next year's elections.

The police stressed that political actors have a responsibility to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of other parties and citizens. Security agencies are expected to provide an environment where Nigerians can freely participate in political activities, but the police said such freedoms must be exercised within the limits of the law.

The command's position is consistent with broader warnings from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who recently cautioned Nigerian youths against allowing politicians to recruit them for violence, carry weapons or participate in intimidation and digital thuggery during the 2027 electoral cycle. Disu said the police would protect peaceful political activities but would not shield individuals who engage in violence or criminal conduct.

The warning is coming against the backdrop of Nigeria's history of election-related violence. Recent reports have documented hundreds of deaths linked to electoral violence over successive election cycles, raising concerns about the ability of political actors and security agencies to prevent a repeat of past incidents as the 2027 elections approach.

The Sokoto Police Command therefore urged political parties and their supporters to resolve disagreements through lawful channels and avoid actions capable of provoking clashes. It also reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to maintain public order before, during and after the elections, stressing that no political ambition should come at the expense of lives and property.
