A 31-year-old man, Happy Thabo Aphane, has been arraigned before the Marble Hall Magistrates’ Court in Limpopo, South Africa, for the brutal killing of his pregnant girlfriend, Botshelo Moimane, aged 23.

According to police reports, the tragic incident occurred on August 19, 2025, when Aphane allegedly stabbed Botshelo multiple times before fleeing the scene. She was four months pregnant at the time. Community members later discovered her lifeless body and alerted authorities.

The accused was arrested the following day, August 20, in Elandskraal, after police launched a swift manhunt.

It has since emerged that this was not the first sign of trouble in their relationship. Back in May 2025, Botshelo had opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm against Aphane. However, she later withdrew the case in court, which led to his release in July 2025.

Aphane has now been charged with murder and remains in custody. The case has been postponed to September 9, 2025, to allow the accused to secure legal representation.

This heartbreaking incident has once again sparked conversations in South Africa about gender-based violence and the need for stronger protections for women, especially those who have previously reported abuse.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
