Sowore Alleges Secret Transfer of Nnamdi Kanu to Sokoto Prison

Nigerian activist and human rights advocate, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been secretly moved from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to a correctional facility in Sokoto State.

Kanu, who has been held by the DSS since 2021, was reportedly sentenced to life imprisonment on Thursday after being found guilty of terrorism-related charges, according to earlier reports by Tori News.

In a strongly worded statement posted on his Facebook page, Sowore insisted that the transfer was carried out discreetly. He alleged that the Federal Government intentionally moved Kanu to a remote northern prison where his safety and welfare could be at greater risk.

Sowore wrote:
“I can confirm now that he’s already in Sokoto prison.”

He further claimed that authorities rejected the possibility of taking Kanu to Kuje Prison in Abuja, saying the IPOB leader would “become a king” there due to support from sympathizers who might turn the facility into a center of pilgrimage.

According to Sowore, the alleged transfer is part of a broader strategy to isolate Kanu:

“They want him far away, isolated, and vulnerable,” he said, accusing the government of using psychological tactics to keep the public calm while executing what he described as a “dark agenda.”

Sowore argued that the government has no intention of releasing Kanu and alleged that even politicians from Kanu’s region are working against him due to fears about his influence.

He concluded by referencing previous attempts to advocate for Kanu’s release, including the #FreeNnamdiKanuNOW protest.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation or denial from the Federal Government, the DSS, or the Nigerian Correctional Service regarding the alleged transfer.
