Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has called on the Nigerian government to take decisive action against individuals responsible for recent attacks targeting Christian communities across the country.

In a statement issued on Friday, Meloni condemned the ongoing violence and stressed that religious freedom is a fundamental human right that must be protected.

She also urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen security in vulnerable Christian communities.

“We strongly condemn the renewed violence against Christian communities in Nigeria today. Religious freedom is an inalienable right, and we call on the Nigerian government to enhance protection for Christian and all religious groups, and to prosecute those responsible for this heinous attack.

“Italy stands with the victims and with communities in Nigeria who feel endangered because of their religious beliefs,” she said.

Her comments follow a new wave of attacks on Christian populations. On Tuesday evening, armed men stormed a church in the Eruku area of Kwara State, killing two people and abducting the pastor along with several worshippers.

The Kwara incident occurred just days after 25 female students were abducted from a boarding school in Kebbi State.

The renewed violence is drawing international scrutiny, especially as the Nigerian government faces increasing pressure from global leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has warned of potential consequences over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
