SUNDAY OLISEH CRITICIZES TREND OF SUPER EAGLES CAPTAINS ON THE BENCH
Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed concern over the practice of team captains being left on the bench during matches.
Speaking on Channels Sports on Sunday, Oliseh labeled the development as abnormal, stressing that a captain’s place should be on the field, leading by example.
“This is an anomaly that began when we started having captains sitting on the bench,” he said. “It’s unacceptable. Your captain can’t be on the bench—it essentially means the assistant is the one leading the team.”
Current Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, made a return to the national team for the first time since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, ahead of the 2025 Unity Cup. He was introduced as a substitute in the 62nd minute during Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Ghana, after which he exited camp to attend his wedding.
