Speculation swirled across social media on Monday claiming that Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala had announced her retirement from international football, just ahead of Nigeria’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash with South Africa.

Reports suggested that the forward had decided to step away from the national team, sparking widespread reactions online.

However, former Super Eagles media officer, Colin Udoh, has dismissed the claims as unfounded.

“Everything about it seemed off from the start,” Udoh said in a video posted on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

“Asisat is far too smart to announce her retirement a day before such a crucial match for Nigeria. Plus, it didn’t come from any of her official channels.

“When she’s ready to retire, she’ll do it properly and thoughtfully. So, whatever you’ve heard — it’s just a rumour. Ignore it.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
