The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old Cameroonian fisherman, Joseph Mbake, over the alleged defilement of a four-year-old girl in Mkpanak community.

The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Uyo.

According to her, the child’s mother became alarmed after noticing an unusual discharge while bathing her daughter. When questioned, the girl reportedly alleged that an adult male had sexually abused her and stated she could identify him if seen. The police subsequently issued a medical examination form, and the child was taken for urgent medical care.

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives launched a surveillance operation within the neighbourhood. In the early hours of March 1, 2026, the suspect—identified as a Cameroonian national—was arrested alongside others to aid investigation.

An identification parade was later conducted in line with standard procedures, during which the victim identified the suspect. Preliminary findings indicate that the alleged incident occurred on February 14, 2026.

The Command condemned all forms of sexual abuse, particularly against minors, and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding vulnerable members of society. It also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious behaviour to the nearest police station.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
