Operatives of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a suspected member of the Eiye Confraternity during a clandestine gathering at the Saje area of Car Wash in Abeokuta.

The arrest followed credible intelligence received by the Command indicating that members of the cult group were meeting with plans to carry out criminal activities.

According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the suspect, identified as Ismail Afolabi, was apprehended while attempting to escape from the scene.

A cross-body bag found in his possession reportedly contained a cut-to-size double-barrel shotgun loaded with live ammunition.

“On Friday, June 27, 2025, at about 5:30 p.m., the Command received actionable intelligence about a secret meeting involving suspected cultists at Saje Area, Car Wash, Abeokuta,” Odutola said.

“SWAT operatives were swiftly deployed to the location, where one suspect, Ismail Afolabi, was caught with the firearm and ammunition,” she added.

Preliminary investigations are underway, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals connected to the gathering.

The Ogun State Police Command reaffirmed its dedication to tackling cult-related crimes and ensuring the safety of residents.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
