TANZANIA’S VICE PRESIDENT NCHIMBI RESIGNS, SET TO LEAVE OFFICE IN SEPTEMBER

Tanzania’s Vice President, Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has announced his resignation from office, less than a year after assuming the country’s second-highest political position. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has accepted his decision.

Nchimbi, who took office in November 2025, said his resignation would take effect on September 4, 2026. He also announced his decision to retire from active politics and public service.

In his resignation statement, Nchimbi said he had previously pledged to President Hassan that he would step aside if she wanted a change in her deputy. He said he was convinced that the President desired such a change and had therefore decided to honour his commitment.

His departure comes amid reports of tensions between him and President Hassan, including criticism within the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party following comments he made in support of constitutional reform at a human rights event.

The Tanzanian government said constitutional procedures would now be initiated to appoint a new vice president. Nchimbi’s resignation marks an unusual political development, as reports indicate he is the first Tanzanian vice president to voluntarily leave the position.
