The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has strengthened the national electricity grid with the commissioning of new transmission line connections at the Ihovbor corridor.

The project is aimed at improving power evacuation and enhancing overall grid stability across the country.

According to a statement from TCN’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the new infrastructure includes turn-in-turn-out connections for the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission lines.

The lines were successfully commissioned at about 7:05 pm on Wednesday, April 23, 2026.

TCN explained that the development will help increase the amount of electricity that can be safely transmitted from power plants to the national grid.

The company said the new system provides additional evacuation capacity for the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) and the Azura Power plant.

Currently, the Ihovbor/Benin line is transmitting about 200 megawatts of electricity, while the Ihovbor/Ajaokuta line carries around 90 megawatts.

TCN noted that the project will help reduce transmission bottlenecks in the corridor and improve the reliability of electricity supply in affected regions.

The company described the upgrade as an important step toward strengthening Nigeria’s power infrastructure and ensuring more efficient distribution of generated electricity.

It added that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise the national transmission network and support the country’s growing demand for electricity.

With this development, TCN says it remains committed to improving grid stability and expanding capacity to better serve homes, businesses, and industries across Nigeria.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
