Telecom Mast Collapses On Building During Rainstorm In Ogun
A landlord at Unity Estate in the Alagbole-Akute area of Ogun State narrowly escaped death on Tuesday when a telecommunications mast toppled onto his residence amid a heavy downpour, damaging parts of the building.
The landlord, who was inside the house at the time of the incident, sustained minor injuries. He was treated by medical personnel and is now reported to be in stable condition. According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Omolola Odutola, the command received a distress call at approximately 2:39 p.m. on Tuesday from one Mr. Moses Olalere, who reported the incident.
Odutola stated, “On June 3, 2025, at about 14:39 hours, the Ogun State Police Command received a distress call from Mr. Moses Olalere, alerting us to a natural disaster that occurred during a heavy rainstorm.”
She explained that, according to eyewitness reports, the mast—owned by IHS Company and located in the Ajuwon area of Akute—collapsed due to severe weather conditions and landed on a residential building within Unity Estate.
“Fortunately, the landlord who was inside the building at the time of the accident sustained only minor injuries. He received prompt medical attention and is now in a stable condition,” she added.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered increased public awareness and sensitisation campaigns across the state to prevent similar occurrences. He has also instructed Area Commanders to liaise with companies operating masts near residential areas to assess the structural integrity of their facilities and take immediate safety measures where necessary.
The police further confirmed that a preliminary investigation has begun, and the public will be kept informed as new details emerge.
