TELKOM EXPANDS CONNECTIVITY AND DIGITAL SKILLS THROUGH NATIONWIDE ICT LAB PROGRAMME

Telkom has rolled out a major nationwide ICT Lab Programme aimed at improving internet connectivity and boosting digital skills in communities across South Africa.

The initiative involves setting up modern ICT laboratories in schools, community centres, and underserved areas. These labs are equipped with computers, high-speed internet, and learning tools to give young people and residents better access to digital technology.

Telkom says the programme is designed to bridge the digital divide by not only providing connectivity but also training users on essential digital skills. Participants will learn basic computer literacy, internet safety, coding, and other competencies needed in today’s digital economy.

The company has already launched several labs in different provinces, with plans to expand to more locations in the coming months. Schools and community groups in rural and township areas are among the main beneficiaries.

Speaking on the project, Telkom officials noted that reliable internet access alone is not enough. They emphasised the need to equip South Africans with the knowledge to use technology effectively for education, business, and job opportunities.

This move forms part of Telkom’s broader commitment to corporate social investment and supporting the country’s digital inclusion goals. Many young South Africans, especially in disadvantaged communities, have limited exposure to technology, which affects their chances in the modern job market.

Local communities have welcomed the initiative. Teachers and students say the ICT labs will make learning more practical and prepare young people for future careers in technology and other sectors.

Telkom plans to partner with government departments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure the labs are properly maintained and continue to serve their purpose long after launch.

The nationwide ICT Lab Programme reinforces Telkom’s role in driving digital transformation across South Africa, especially as the country works towards building a more inclusive and digitally skilled society.
