"TENSION BUILDS AS SOWORE HEADS TO POLICE HQ WITH SUPPORTERS OVER DEFAMATION PETITION"
Full House: Sowore Storms Police HQ Amid Tension, Kicks Off #EgbetokunMustGo Protest
Activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, is set to appear at the Force Headquarters in Abuja today, following an invitation from the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit.
The police summon, dated August 5, is reportedly connected to a petition accusing Sowore of forgery and criminal defamation. However, the activist says he’s still in the dark about the exact content of the petition or who filed it.
Despite the uncertainty, Sowore has vowed not to show up quietly. In a statement shared Tuesday night, he confirmed his attendance and called on fellow activists, civil rights defenders, and citizens to join him in solidarity.
“I’m going with a full house,” Sowore announced, rallying what he called “revolutionary comrades, citizens of conscience, voices of resistance” to show up at the police headquarters.
He also used the opportunity to launch the #EgbetokunMustGo and #PoliceProtest campaigns, signaling what may be the beginning of fresh demonstrations against police leadership and conduct in Nigeria.
Sources close to the movement say tensions are high as fears grow that a protest could erupt during Sowore’s visit. Supporters have been mobilizing on social media, and security around the Force Headquarters is expected to be tight.
Sowore had earlier written to the Monitoring Unit, requesting to see the petition and identify the petitioner. However, the police responded by insisting he appear in person, promising to disclose the full details at the meeting.
