THE POLICE HAVE DETAINED A MAN IN ONDO FOR ILLEGALLY INSTALLING HIMSELF AS A TRADITIONAL RULER.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Adekolajo Aladeseyi, a self-proclaimed traditional ruler, for allegedly installing himself as the Olujare of Ijare in the Ifedore Local Government Area. Four other individuals involved in the installation process were also arrested.
State Commissioner of Police, Olutokunbo Afolabi, confirmed the arrest, stating it was made under the direction of the state government. Afolabi clarified that Aladeseyi's installation did not adhere to the legal procedures and lacked approval from both the local and state governments.
“This action was necessary to maintain peace and prevent a potential breakdown of law and order in the community.
“The suspects’ conduct was unlawful, and their actions could have resulted in violence,” he stated.
According to Afolabi, the suspects will be charged in court once the investigation is completed. Some kingmakers and royal families in Ijare have opposed the alleged installation of Aladeseyi as the community's traditional ruler, claiming they were excluded from the selection process, which is required by law.
The Olujare stool, a first-class traditional title, became vacant after the death of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun, Kokotiri II, four years ago.
