THREE POLICE OFFICERS DISMISSED OVER UNIPORT GRADUATE’S KILLING

The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three officers involved in the killing of a University of Port Harcourt graduate, Anthony Obodo, in Port Harcourt.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this on Wednesday while parading the dismissed officers before journalists.

Obodo was reportedly shot by a police patrol team last Thursday around the Ada George area of Port Harcourt after officers allegedly pursued his vehicle for failing to stop.

One of the officers, Corporal Alfred Louis, reportedly fired three shots at the vehicle, with one bullet hitting Obodo. He was rushed to Palmer’s Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

According to Adepoju, the three officers were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department, where they underwent an orderly room trial.

The police commissioner said the investigation established the officers’ culpability, leading to their dismissal from the Nigeria Police Force.

He added that the dismissed officers would be charged to court for their alleged roles in the incident.

Meanwhile, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, who was allegedly part of the patrol team and fled after the shooting, has been declared a deserter. Police said efforts were ongoing to arrest him.

Adepoju reiterated that the command would not protect officers found guilty of misconduct, excessive use of force, abuse of office or other violations of the law.
