A heavy thunderstorm on September 3, 2025, has caused the collapse of a major 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line in Enugu, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).

The incident happened near Tower 97, where the downed power conductor sparked a massive surge that led to multiple damages. A residential building located directly under the line was destroyed, a car parked within the right-of-way was gutted, and two cows grazing nearby were electrocuted.

Thankfully, no human lives were lost.

Following the incident, Engr. Tom Inugonum, Regional Manager of TCN Enugu Region, led a team to inspect the site. TCN’s Quick Response Line Maintenance crew has since started clearing the damaged section in preparation for restringing new conductors.

Despite the destruction, the electricity supply to Nsukka was not affected. TCN confirmed that bulk power is currently being routed through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) to ensure a continuous supply.

The company expressed relief over the absence of casualties but stressed the urgent need for Nigerians to respect transmission line corridors.

“This serves as a stark reminder of the critical need to avoid building, parking, or engaging in any activities within the transmission lines’ Right of Way,” TCN said in a statement.

It also appealed to the public to observe all safety rules around power facilities while reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives, property, and the stability of the national grid.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
