TINUBU, BUHARI CELEBRATE VANGUARD PUBLISHER ‘UNCLE SAM’ AT 90
President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari have extended heartfelt congratulations to veteran journalist and Vanguard newspaper publisher, Sam Amuka-Pemu—fondly known as ‘Uncle Sam’—on the occasion of his 90th birthday, marked on Friday, June 13, 2025.
Both leaders praised Amuka-Pemu’s remarkable legacy in journalism and his enduring contributions to national development.
In a tribute released on Friday, President Tinubu described Amuka-Pemu as an “iconic journalist” and reflected on his distinguished media career.
“Today, I celebrate Prince Sam Amuka-Pemu, iconic journalist and publisher of Vanguard newspaper, on his 90th birthday,” Tinubu stated.
He highlighted Amuka-Pemu’s professional journey from the Daily Times, to co-founding The Punch alongside the late Chief Olu Aboderin, and eventually launching Vanguard in 1984.
President Tinubu applauded the publisher’s staying power in the media industry, noting that Vanguard remains a leading publication 41 years after its inception—a testament to Amuka-Pemu’s “vision, credit, and managerial expertise.”
Describing him as “a shining example of dedication, resilience, and integrity,” Tinubu emphasized that Amuka-Pemu is more than a media icon—he’s also a respected elder statesman in Delta State and the South-South region.
He further noted that the media pioneer was recently honoured during Democracy Day with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) award, in recognition of his contributions to journalism and national growth.
President Tinubu encouraged young journalists to draw inspiration from Amuka-Pemu’s life, wishing him continued strength and many more impactful years. He expressed the nation’s deep appreciation for his lasting legacy.
In a separate message released on Thursday, June 12, 2025, former President Buhari also celebrated Amuka-Pemu.
In a statement signed by his spokesperson Garba Shehu, Buhari hailed him as a “guru journalist, columnist, and publisher,” noting that his work will be remembered as a golden chapter in Nigeria’s history.
Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, Buhari remarked, “I owe a deep debt to him.”
He recalled the late journalist’s signature column and the nickname ‘Sad Sam’, noting that, “Despite the name, his writing was enlightening—offering not just information but vision, which is invaluable.”
Buhari praised Amuka-Pemu’s fearless journalism, describing him as someone who “used his pen as a broom to sweep away societal rot.” He added that Vanguard continues this legacy by holding both government and society accountable.
The former president concluded with warm wishes for Uncle Sam: “May you enjoy many more years of good health, happiness, and service to journalism and the nation.”
Sam Amuka-Pemu’s 90th birthday marks a major milestone in the life of a man revered for his pioneering role in Nigerian journalism, his adherence to ethical reporting, and his lasting influence on the country’s media landscape.
