TINUBU HOLDS CLOSED-DOOR TALKS WITH SPEAKER ABBAS, REPS MEMBERS AT ASO VILLA
President Bola Tinubu on Friday held a closed-door meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, alongside some members of the House at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting took place shortly after the lawmakers joined the President for Jummah prayers at the State House mosque.
Although the engagement was not on the President’s official schedule, officials confirmed that Abbas arrived at the Villa with other lawmakers, including the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Usman Kumo.
The agenda of the meeting was not disclosed, and officials who spoke said they were not aware of the specific issues discussed.
According to a presidential aide, the visit followed a pattern of recent engagements between the President and federal lawmakers.
He noted that both senators and House members had recently held separate closed-door meetings with the President at the Villa.
The development comes just two days after Senate leadership, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, also met with Tinubu behind closed doors.
Reports had emerged after that meeting suggesting lawmakers were seeking automatic return tickets ahead of the 2027 elections, though the President reportedly rejected the request and reaffirmed the role of governors in party primaries.
Tinubu also recently met with APC governors, where he reportedly ceded greater influence over the conduct of primaries to state governors in line with the Electoral Act.
The APC has fixed its House of Representatives primaries for May 15, 2026, with the sale of nomination forms set to begin soon.
The series of meetings has continued to generate political discussions, particularly among lawmakers concerned about their re-election prospects ahead of 2027.
